The ICAMB International Summer School 2025, held from July 7 to July 17, 2025, offered a unique blend of cultural, outdoor, and academic experiences. Thirteen (13) students from Ocean University of China (OUC) embarked on a journey that began with exploring historical and cultural landmarks in Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, and Terengganu. This immersive experience allowed them to delve into Malaysia’s vibrant, multi-ethnic, multicultural, and multilingual society, enriching their understanding of the diverse cultural tapestry that defines the nation.
Participants gained firsthand understanding of marine conservation efforts by visiting UMT’s Research Station in Chagar Hutang, Redang, where they observed and learned about various turtle conservation initiatives, including nesting monitoring, hatchling protection, and community engagement programs aimed at preserving endangered sea turtle species. Participants also engaged deeply with coastal livelihoods by actively participating in the traditional clam, oyster, and mussel harvesting practices at Setiu Wetlands. This hands-on experience provided them with valuable practical insights into the ecological dynamics of wetland ecosystems and the importance of sustainable resource utilization for local communities.
Beyond outdoor activities, students attended academic seminars and laboratory tours to enhance their research skills and deepen their understanding of marine environmental sciences. A highlight of the program was the interaction with ICAMB students and staff through an energizing Campus Explorace game at the UMT campus. This activity allowed participants to explore the university’s state-of-the-art facilities and vibrant campus environment and build stronger bonds with local students. It facilitated meaningful cross-cultural exchange, offered an insightful introduction to university life, and helped to deepen international camaraderie.
Overall, the program successfully promoted cross-border collaboration, expanded global networks, and inspired a lasting commitment to sustainability. It equipped participants with practical skills, innovative perspectives, and a broader understanding of environmental issues and conservation challenges, preparing them to become future leaders in sustainable development and ecological stewardship. This emphasis on international collaboration fosters a sense of connection and belonging in our global community.
