Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), through the Institute of Climate Adaptation and Marine Biotechnology (ICAMB), proudly hosted Partnerships to Practice: An Artemia Workshop at the UMT Senate Hall, Terengganu, Malaysia, from 14 to 16 June 2026.

The opening ceremony was officiated by H.E. Peter Van Acker, Ambassador of Belgium to Malaysia, together with Dato’ Haji Azahari Hj. Othman, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Fisheries Malaysia (DOF). The event was also attended by Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Zamri bin Ibrahim, Vice-Chancellor of UMT, and Prof. Dr. Yeong Yik Sung, Director of ICAMB.

During the workshop, representatives from the International Artemia Aquaculture Consortium (IAAC) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) discussed several key issues related to the sustainable development of the Artemia farming industry. Particular attention was given to eight proposed resolutions aimed at promoting a more systematic and well-organised Artemia farming sector while improving economic returns for farmers. The discussions also focused on the challenges faced by Artemia producers and the potential solutions and support that could be provided by IAAC and FAO to member countries.

In addition, IAAC and FAO experts worked together to develop a standard manual and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Artemia farming. These guidelines are intended to serve as a primary reference for Artemia producers and will be validated and monitored by FAO to ensure their effective implementation.

Participants also attended a short workshop on Artemia research activities at UMT and later visited a commercial fish farm in Kuantan, Pahang, where Artemia is widely used as the primary live feed for aquaculture production.

The programme was jointly organised by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Network of Aquaculture Centres in Asia-Pacific (NACA), Ghent University, the Artemia Reference Center, and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), bringing together international experts, researchers, and industry representatives to advance sustainable Artemia production practices.
